    Reading For The Common Good

    Reading For The Common Good

    Ready to unwind and dive into a great read with colleagues? Reading for the Common Good is a common reading – aka book club – experience for all SFHE members and friends.  Starting in January 2026, we will read “Hacking College: Why the Major Doesn’t Matter and What Really Does” by Ned Scott Laff and Scott Carlson.

    Organized in seven chapters, Laff and Carlson leverage their experiences working in higher education to offer a framework for student success. They also probe the idea of a “wicked problem.”

    Want to know what that wicked problem is?  Get together a group of your colleagues and read this book together. The Reading for the Common Good offers you a chance to build professional connections and engage in meaningful conversations.

    Featured Speaker 2025 SFHE Conference

    Dr. Tim San Pedro, Associate Professor, The Ohio State University

    Timothy San Pedro is an associate professor of Multicultural and Equity Studies in the Department of Teaching and Learing. San Pedro’s scholarship focuses on the intricate link between motivation, engagement, and identity construction to curricula and pedagogical practices that re-focus content and conversations upon Indigenous histories, perspectives, and literacies.

    His co-authored chapter with Valerie Kinloch in Humanizing Research titled “The Space between Listening and Story-ing: Foundations for Projects in Humanization” examines how trust, vulnerabilities, and the development of relationships (or story-ing) provide spaces to engage in transformative resistances and praxis in academic, community, and research settings with participants.

    THEME: Future Focus/Future Issues

    Join us January 13, 2025 at 6pm Central time for an online gathering with SFHE friends and colleagues. This, and future gatherings, will provide an opportunity to catch up with SFHE and discuss issues pertinent to higher education. Our first gathering will focus on academic freedom. Academic freedom is considered to be the freedom of educators, students, and academic institutions to pursue knowledge and other intellectual activities without fear of censorship or retaliation of any kind. Unfortunately, the current environment around academic freedom is complicated by a number of political, technological, economic, and social factors. Emerging threats to academic freedom include changing perceptions of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion; artificial intelligence; erosion of tenure processes; and more.

  • Work by W.E.B. Dubois selected for Spring Reading for the Common Good.

    Our selection for the Spring 2023 Reading for the Common Good program is The Education of Black People by W.E.B DuBois. Suggestions for selected chapters and supplementary materials will be provided. This selection is tied to our 2023 Conference theme, “Du Bois, Higher Education and Justice.” An SFHE member must lead the group, but anyone can participate. Groups can meet online or in person. Contact smcallister@sfhe.org if you would like to start a group and SFHE will provide the books.
